EI Implementation at AEGE — Physical Education
Basketball with Focus on Emotional Intelligence
The AEGE — Lagos, Portugal, Physical Education department recently implemented an innovative basketball lesson focused on developing students’ Emotional Intelligence (EI) alongside technical and tactical sports skills. Through a combination of dribbling exercises, shooting challenges, and competitive 5v5 games, students were encouraged to improve not only their basketball performance but also important personal and social competencies such as communication, empathy, self-regulation, and fair play.
One of the highlights of the session was a team shooting competition in which students worked collaboratively to achieve a common objective, promoting teamwork and positive interaction. After the games, students completed a self-assessment questionnaire reflecting on their emotional responses, decision-making, communication, and behaviour during the activities.

The lesson created a highly engaging and positive learning environment. Students demonstrated enthusiasm, active participation, and increasing awareness of the importance of emotional control and respectful behaviour in sports contexts. Teachers observed improvements in cooperation, resilience, and peer support throughout the session.
This initiative successfully combined physical activity with emotional and social learning, reinforcing the role of sport as a valuable tool for students’ holistic development and well-being.
